I try to base my lesson plans around the individual student and their learning needs. I usually ask them to bring a piece of work to our first meeting, and I assess what they need to work on in that course and base my lessons according to my findings. I like to have good communication between myself and my student(s). I also like to use many resources (visual aids, books, journal article, games, etc.) in my tutorials.

A very friendly, relaxed and patient tutor who has been offering part time tuition for many years now. I specialise in History, History of Art and Scots Law tuition, but am also happy to tutor in English Literature, Creative Writing and Politics/Modern Studies. As yet I have no paid teaching experience, but I have always tutored friends and family, including my sister for her History dissertation. I have been paid a couple of times for proof-reading, and have proofread documents for lawyers. I have a very high level of accuracy of expression, a good deal of patience, and a knack for explaining complex ideas

I still find my school History teacher very inspiring, both for how I express myself and for how I teach others. He was very clear about how to write good essays: clarity, coherence, and content (in order of importance, but all fundamental). When I review somebody's work, I concentrate first on making sure that their ideas are clear and obvious to the reader. I then ensure that the ideas are set out logically. Only then can the content of the essay shine through

However, content does not come from nowhere. In explaining any subject, I start big and work down to the smallest details. For example, History is home to a series of grand debates, such as free will vs. fate. From their I could narrow the focus to revolution - do people revolt because they want to or because they are forced to? From their, a student could approach a classic exam question like "The 1917 Russian Revolution was the will of the people. Discuss." with a mature attitude to joining the great conversation of History.

I am approachable, a good listener, strongly believing in tailoring lessons to a student's needs and learning styles. Willing to use different types of resources.
